Activities of the Three Cultures Foundation in Morocco in November 2023
Throughout the month of November, the Three Cultures Foundation is dedicating a special cycle to Morocco, with the aim of showing the cultural diversity of this country from its headquarters in Seville, through a programme that includes cinema, concerts, haute couture fashion shows, conferences and even a sports tournament.
These proposals will be complemented by other activities that will also take place in Morocco with the presence of the Foundation. The following is a breakdown of these initiatives.
1. Meeting with the poet Alejandro Pedregosa at the Casablanca Children's and Young People's Book Fair. 16 November from 10.00 a.m.
The Three Cultures Foundation is organising, in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in Morocco, the Cervantes Institute in Casablanca and the Kalandraka publishing house, and as part of Morocco Month, a meeting with the poet Alejandro Pedregosa, on 16 November at the Casablanca Children's and Young People's Book Fair.
The author from Granada will present the poetry book "Álbum de familia" (Kalandraka), illustrated by Carole Hénaff, which brings us closer to the melting pot of cultures that surrounds us. This book received the 13th City of Orihuela International Poetry Prize for Girls and Boys.
In two morning sessions, the students of the Spanish school and high school IE Juan Ramón Jiménez in Casablanca will enjoy Pedregosa's poems which are "a sample of the ethnic diversity of any big city".
2. Tribute in Tangiers to Mohamed Chukri in three languages. 18 November from 7.30 p.m. at the Riad Sultan Space.
The Three Cultures Foundation and the Riad Sultan cultural and artistic space are organising a tribute to one of the essential voices of Maghrebi literature, the Moroccan Mohamed Chukri, on the 20th anniversary of his death and as part of Morocco Month, on Saturday 18 November at 7.30 p.m. in Tangiers and in three languages.
The event will feature a conversation with the Arabist Rocío Rojas-Marcos, author of the biography "Mohamed Chukri: hambre de escritura" (Zut, 2021), which will analyse the figure of this author from different perspectives and will be moderated by the librarian Olga Cuadrado.
It will be followed by a reading, in Arabic, French and Spanish, of excerpts from the play "Man of Naked Bread", by the playwright Zoubeir Ben Bouchta. With the participation of Ali Tajiti in the Spanish version. In addition, photographs of Mohamed Chukri by the photographer Rachid El Ouattassi will be projected.
3. The Three Cultures Foundation participates in the reopening of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Casablanca, Morocco.
The Moroccan Ministry of Culture and the Casablanca City Council along with the Three Cultures Foundation are among the main institutions that will be present at the reopening of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Casablanca.
This temple, which has been closed for restoration work for years, will be reopened to the public on 18 November 2023, a public holiday in Morocco.
The Three Cultures Foundation is providing an artistic programme in which music once again brings the neighbouring countries of Spain and Morocco closer together. The repertoire will begin with the soprano Aurora Galán, who will be accompanied on the piano by Jesús Manuel de Sancha Navarro, who will come to Casablanca from Seville to offer a concert with clear Spanish and Andalusian roots.
The repertoire includes works by Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca with compositions with orientalist overtones. The Foundation is once again collaborating with the CasaSawt choir, which was present at the summer concerts in Seville. This choir, directed by Adnane Matrone, will close the cathedral's opening concert with a rich repertoire of Arab composers with arrangements by maestro Matrone.
