Amin Maalouf presents his latest novel at the Fundación Tres Culturas
The Fundación Tres Culturas del Mediterráneo is organising, together with Casa Árabe and Alianza Editorial, the presentation of the latest novel by the well-known French-Lebanese writer, philosopher and thinker Amin Maalouf.
The author will present his latest book, 'Our Unexpected Brothers', in which he tells a thriller with mythological roots and intellectual depth in relation to the period of crisis that the world is going through today.
The work tells the story of the only two inhabitants of a small island on the Atlantic coast who live avoiding each other. An inexplicable breakdown of all the media will put an end to their isolation.
The mystery will lead to an encounter between our contemporaries and their "unexpected brothers", who belong to a mysterious civilisation that claims to be the heir to ancient Greece.
In this novel, Maalouf tackles several concepts present in his essays such as 'Killer Identities', 'The Misalignment of the World' and 'The Shipwreck of Civilizations' through a prism of optimism.
In this sense, the Franco-Lebanese thinker states that "I needed to look in fiction for the hope that I can no longer find in real history. Thus were born in my spirit these 'unexpected brothers', faithful heirs to the miracle of ancient Greece".
Although Maalouf wrote the novel before the pandemic, it is impossible not to find in it the echo of our times, of our planet threatened as never before. In 'Our Unexpected Brothers', the author describes a society in crisis that is forced to change.
With his work, Maalouf calls for action and demands understanding and peaceful coexistence. "It is not enough to sit back and wait for the solution to come. That is not going to happen.
The institutions Casa Árabe and Alianza Editorial are part of the organisation of the session, which will take place this coming Tuesday 19 January at 18:00. This will be transmitted virtually and shared through the social networks of the Fundación Tres Culturas.
The author will talk to Inés Martín Rodrigo, journalist from ABC Cultural. The organisation also offers simultaneous translation from French to Spanish.
Winner of the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature in 2010, the career of Amin Maalouf (Beirut, 1949) has been full of recognition. The author is also an outstanding member of the Académie Française. At the institution he occupies chair number 29, once belonging to the philosopher Claude Lévi-Strauss.
A novelist, journalist and essayist, his work has been translated into over 40 languages and is published by Alianza Editorial. Among the many prizes he has received, the Goncourt Prize for 'La roca de Tanios' and the Aujourd'hui 2019 Prize for the best book on geopolitics for 'El naufragio de las civilizaciones' should be mentioned.
Amin Maalouf has dedicated his work and his work to strengthening ties between East and West. All this in a time of deep changes and divisions.
