On 27 February, the Dominican Republic will commemorate the 178th anniversary of its independence, an appropriate date to re-examine the thinking and actions of the Trinitarians. On this occasion, on 23 February, the Cervantes Institute of Rabat in Morocco will present the details of this valuable and exciting feat that culminated in the liberation of the country from Haitian domination for 22 years.

The conference organised for the occasion will be given by Mr. Amaury Justo Duarte, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Morocco, who will recount the events that led to this extraordinary epic. Meanwhile, Dr. Abdelmouneim Bounou, professor at the Mohammed V University of Rabat, will briefly present the thematic framework of the conference through a speech entitled '1844, a crucial date for the Dominican Republic and Morocco'

Juan Pablo Duarte, Matías Ramón Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, known as the Fathers of the Fatherland, formed the Secret Society La Trinitaria with a group of nationalist leaders, to perpetrate a movement that led to the proclamation of the independence of the Dominican Republic as a sovereign state with a blunderbuss from the Puerta del Conde, where they raised the tricolour flag on 27 February 1844.
