Indiana Jones will be set in Moroccan cities
The Moroccan Film Centre, CCM, announced that the new and fifth film in the Indiana Jones saga has chosen several locations in Morocco to shoot the sequel to these films. The film crew has chosen the city of Fez and Oujda for the project, although the production started filming on 7 June in London, UK. Last Sunday, fans and onlookers in the Mellah and Bab Semmarine districts of the area were able to enjoy the typical sets of the films about Hollywood's most famous archaeologist. This film will be the new installment after the success of the four previous films 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' (1981), 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' (1984), 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (1989) and the most recent, 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' (2008).
This new chapter of the archaeologist's adventures had many problems and delays in filming, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the team has already announced that the planned release date will be July 2022. The title and plot of the sequel is still unknown, but according to sources close to the team, a story with Nazis as enemies will be brought back to the big screen. What we do know is that Harrison Ford will continue with his role as Indiana Jones, and, in addition, the film will feature the cast of several well-known actors and actresses such as the English Phoebe Walller-Bridge, starring actress in 'No Time To Die', the most recent installment of James Bond; Boyd Holbrook, one of the stars of the Netflix series 'Narcos'; Shaunette Reneé Wilson ('Black Panther') and Thomas Kretschmann ('The Pianist'). But to the chagrin of fans, Steven Spielberg, known for making the four previous films and other well-known films such as 'Schindler's List' (1993), 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998) and 'Jaws' (1978), will not be the director of this next one. His role will be taken over by American Jamen Mangold, known for directing some of the films in the 'X-Men' saga. Although Spielberg will not be the director, he has already mentioned that in this film he will be one of the producers, so the story will remain faithful to the previous instalments. John Williams, known for composing the music for 'Star Wars' and 'Harry Potter', among others, will also return to add rhythm to this saga.
Morocco is no newcomer to hosting major Hollywood productions and is one of the favourite locations for filmmakers to shoot. Its vast sandy landscapes and other diverse natural ecosystems are one of the main backdrops chosen by directors for most of their films. The North African country's architecture is also a major attraction for US films. Another reason for choosing this region is because of the tariff advantages offered by the state itself, and the fact that filming there is cheaper than elsewhere. The MCC announced that this filming joins other super productions that have been filmed in the area such as the series 'Game of Thrones', some James Bond films, 'Mission Impossible', 'Homeland', the famous saga of 'The Mummy', 'Aquaman' or 'Sex and the City 2', among others.
