Kandinsky, colour and music
Vasili Kandinsky, one of the precursors of abstract art, possessed the gift of synesthesia, an ability that shaped his life when he was 30 years old. The documentary Kandinsky: voir la musique, réinventer la peinture, directed by Pierre-Henri Gibert, reviews the painter's career and explores the influence that music had on his work. Exclusive premiere on 6 November
CaixaForum+, online headquarters of In-Edit
The collaboration between Caixaforum+ and the In-Edit festival, a benchmark for music documentaries, has been renewed, and thanks to this, the platform will offer 16 titles from the new edition, which this year will be hosted online from 17 November to 1 December.
This selection includes highly anticipated documentaries such as:
- Daytime Revolution, in which Erik Nelson brings together the best moments from the week John Lennon and Yoko Ono appeared on The Mike Douglas Show,
- Legacy, in which Manal Masri recounts how Scandinavia became a refuge for great African-American jazz artists in the 1950s and 1970s, and collects testimonies from their children, who narrate the lights and shadows of a legacy marked by the wounds of racism and the search for their own identity.
- In addition, Stanley Nelson and Nicole London dive into the heart of funk with We Want The Funk!, which was born of African races, soul and early jazz and exploded into pure collective energy.
- Remedios Malvárez and Arturo Andújar travel in Fandango to the memory and present of one of the oldest popular musical expressions in the Iberian Peninsula.
- And Joel Zito Araújo traces the trajectory of the Afro-Brazilian company that brought manifestations of black culture (samba, maracatu, capoeira, umbanda, macumba...) to the world and was ignored by official history, in Brasiliana - O Musical Negro Que Apresentou O Brasil Ao Mundo.
Some of the titles follow in the footsteps of creators such as those dedicated to the late Hermeto Pascoal (O Menino D'Olho D'Água), international producer and DJ Andrés Campo (Alma bakala), young Catalan artist ADMIRE (ADMIRE: Road to Apolo), the Sahrawi composer and singer Mariem Hassan (Mariem) and the composer, actress, interdisciplinary artist and pioneer of the contemporary avant-garde Meredith Monk (Monk in Pieces).
These are films that explore the history of salsa (La salsa vive), reconfigure the narrative of contemporary Syria through music in exile (Half Moon), trace the link between 1990s techno in Poland and the new generations (Rave), and investigate Detroit techno in the mid-1980s (God Said Give 'Em Drum Machines).
The Eden of Elephants
From 10 November, other documentaries from the SUNCINE catalogue, the International Environmental Film Festival, will be available.
The documentary Kaza. The Last Refuge for Elephants is a CaixaForum+ production about the Kaza project, the creation of the world's largest cross-border wildlife reserve, which premiered worldwide at the opening of SUNCINE on 30 October, the day it also landed on the platform.
Between 10 and 23 November, the platform will become the online headquarters of SUNCINE, the International Environmental Film Festival, and will premiere eight more documentaries.
Pere Portabella, cult filmmaker, misunderstood politician
Claudio Zulian portrays Pere Portabella, cult filmmaker and intellectual with a strong political commitment and staunch activist in defence of freedoms. Constel·lació Portabella premiered in the Venezia Classici section of the Venice Film Festival. Premiere on the platform on 15 November
