The Cervantes Institute and the Caro y Cuervo Institute of Colombia agree to strengthen their collaboration
The director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, and his Colombian counterpart, the director of the Caro y Cuervo Institute, Medófilo Medina, met in Bogotá as part of García Montero's visit to Colombia, which ends tomorrow, Sunday.
During the meeting, they discussed upcoming joint projects between the two institutions, such as collaboration in the National Conference "Estallido Social 2021", which the Colombian institute is preparing in September on the relationship between language and power, and language and protest. In addition, the director of the Cervantes Institute offered the Caro y Cuervo Institute the network of centres in Africa to carry out research on the African substratum in Colombian culture and society, and collaboration in the study of native and indigenous languages - in addition to Spanish, the country has more than 65 indigenous languages, two Creole languages and Romani.
The delegation of the Caro y Cuervo Institute which, since 2014 and thanks to a collaboration agreement, has been installed at the headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in Madrid, and has made it possible to work together in the dissemination of linguistic and cultural projects such as the "Diccionario de colombianismos", among others. This agreement is due to be renewed in 2024 with the Colombian Ministry of Culture, which is responsible for the Caro y Cuervo Institute.
Created in 1942, the Caro y Cuervo Institute is the reference body for culture and the humanities in the South American country. Its aim is to promote and develop research, teaching, consultancy and the dissemination of the languages of the national territory and its literatures.
