The Three Cultures Foundation is committed to showcasing the magic and mystery of flamenco through cinema

The Three Cultures Foundation
Cinema Tuesdays in October: Flamenco series – ‘Terremoto, el documental’ (Terremoto, the documentary)

Both in the past and today, many filmmakers immerse themselves in learning about, researching and bringing to the screen the great figures of flamenco, whether in singing, dancing or guitar playing.

In this series, we will be able to enjoy ‘Fandango’, one of the most diverse styles of flamenco, by the award-winning Huelva-based director Remedios Malvárez and Arturo Andújar. We will learn more about the Malaga-born singer Miguel Molina through the eyes of the prolific director Paco Millán and the letters received and sent by the protagonist. We will also delve into the artistic careers of two great and renowned artists, guided by Algeciras-born director Alexis Morente: ‘Camarón: Flamenco y revolución’ and Sergio Crespo, ‘El Lebrijano, un gitano universal’.

TERREMOTO, THE DOCUMENTARY

Álvaro Mayoral and Nacho Rojas, Spain, 2020 · 70 min

Synopsis: No one dies as long as they live on in our memories. Hidden from the general public, Terremoto de Jerez is key to the history of flamenco in Spain. This documentary reveals the incredible life of an unlikely hero: a gypsy, illiterate, born into poverty and lacking in education, but precisely because of this, he embodied the duende in a natural and genuine way. Through direct testimonies, hundreds of photographs and black and white recordings, we rescue the best flamenco singer in history, Terremoto de Jerez, from oblivion. His style, a paradigm of black sounds, represents the sublimation of cante jondo.
