The Three Cultures Foundation presents the colloquium ‘Between Fortuny and Bertuchi: The intermediate generation. A modern view of Al-Andalus’

The Three Cultures Foundation
Part of the Al-Andalus Chair programme

The Academic Institute of Arts and the Al-Andalus Chair of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, the Spanish Embassy in Morocco and the Three Cultures Foundation are organising an international meeting to analyse the painters who were interested in Al-Andalus and Morocco, forming the intermediate generation between Fortuny and Bertuchi.

The trajectories of artists who moved between academic Orientalism, Impressionism and Modernism, such as Francisco Pradilla y Ortiz, Joaquín Sorolla, Enrique Simonet, Francisco Iturrino and Kees Van Dongen, among others, will be explored.

The discussion will focus on how the impact of the discovery of the ‘East’ through stays in Andalusia and Morocco promoted a modern view of the visual arts and was reflected in the work of an entire generation of Spanish artists.

The symposium will feature renowned experts representing various institutions collaborating with the Al-Andalus Chair of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, including the Royal Alcázar of Seville, the Faculty of Fine Arts (University of Seville), the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville, the CSIC, the National Art Museum of Catalonia (Barcelona), the Prado Museum (Madrid), and the Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art at Durham University.

The event will also feature the presentation of the book ‘La convivencia en Al-Ándalus’ (Coexistence in Al-Andalus) by María Jesús Viguera.
