The Three Cultures Foundation and the Institut français de Sevilla, in collaboration with the publishing house Cabaret Voltaire, are organising the presentation of El insomnio (Cabaret Voltaire, 2022), Tahar Ben Jelloun's most recent work, on 1 December at 7pm.

A film scriptwriter from Tangiers discovers that in order to sleep he needs to kill. But the effect diminishes over time and he is forced to repeat the crime in order to extend the periods when he manages to rest. Undercover, he commits crimes as perfect as those he devises for the cinema. The more important his victims are, the better he sleeps. And so the killing spree continues.

El insomnio is Tahar Ben Jelloun's first foray into crime novels, which he intermingles with a fine humour that is unusual in his writing. A thriller that, like the rest of his prolific work, reflects on the problems that torment today's society.

The author will be in conversation with Lola López Enamorado, professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Seville and former director of the Cervantes Institute centres in Marrakech, Casablanca, Tetouan and Algiers.

In addition, El insomnio will be the new reading of the reading clubs Three with books from the Three Cultures Foundation and Casa África. The moderator of the latter, Ángeles Jurado, will hold an online session with the members of both clubs from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Places to attend in person are limited, so it is essential to register in advance via THIS LINK.

Translation from French into Spanish will be provided.
