From 1 April to 31 May, Ibero-American university students will be able to submit their essays on the main socio-economic challenges facing their countries, and compete for important prizes, with the collaboration of CAF

3rd edition of the university essay competition Ideas for the Future opens

Abre la 3ª edición del concurso de ensayos universitarios Ideas Para el Futuro

CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, in collaboration with the Bank of Spain, opens the 3rd edition of the university essay contest Ideas Para el Futuro, which promotes the exchange and discussion of ideas that contribute to sustainable development, and gives visibility to young talent in the region.

In this year's edition, young university students can write their essays on development challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean. Below are some topics to guide the preparation of the essays: 

  • Challenges of reconstruction in terms of environmental sustainability;
  • Challenges for reviving economies while ensuring macroeconomic sustainability;
  • Building social protection systems for resilient and inclusive societies;
  • Building more robust health systems;
  • Integration and cooperation challenges to address future pandemics;
  • Digital innovation to boost employment, education and social service delivery.
  • Role of infrastructure investment in post-COVID recovery and financing alternatives.
Prizes

Prizes will be awarded for the best essay at the national level and the three best essays at the Ibero-American level. The winners at the Ibero-American level will be able to present their essay at the CAF Conference, to be held in November 2021, and will receive the following prizes:

  •  Guillermo Perry Prize: US$ 3,000
  •  Second place: USD 2,000
  •  Third place: USD 1,000
Important dates and entry criteria

The competition launches on 1 April and the deadline for essay submissions is 31 May. The competition is open to students between the ages of 18 and 29 (born strictly between 31 December 1991 and 1 January 2003). Applicants must be undergraduate or postgraduate university students in any discipline, enrolled in a university in one of the 19 CAF countries, with proof of studies (regular student certificate or equivalent).
