The 1,648-metre-long bridge will connect and modernise the southern provinces, meeting high standards of safety and sustainability

Morocco has embarked on one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in its recent history with the construction of Africa's longest road bridge over the Saguia El Hamra River in the city of Laayoune.

This impressive project, requiring an investment of 1.38 billion dirhams (about 130 million euros), stands as a symbol of the country's commitment to sustainable development and the modernisation of its southern provinces.

The viaduct, which forms an essential part of the extensive Tiznit-Dakhla expressway project, will span 1,648 metres, with a width of 21.4 metres. Its design stands out not only for its size, but also for its innovation and attention to detail.

As Rue20 reports, it will have two separate routes, each with two lanes for road traffic, as well as a dedicated pedestrian walkway, ensuring the safety and comfort of all users. The infrastructure has been conceived under the strictest environmental sustainability criteria, reflecting Morocco's commitment to protecting the environment while boosting its economic development.

This engineering project, on a scale unprecedented on the African continent, goes beyond its technical importance. It is a demonstration of Morocco's strategic vision, which, under the clear and ambitious directives of King Mohammed VI, has embarked on a new development model for the southern provinces. This model seeks not only the integration of these regions into the country's economic and social structure, but also their flourishing as poles of growth and prosperity. The bridge, in this sense, becomes a symbol of union, not only between different geographical points, but also between communities, facilitating social and economic cohesion.

The construction of the viaduct also represents a significant advance in the country's infrastructure, with direct implications for regional development. By connecting Laayoune more efficiently to other parts of the country, the bridge will play a crucial role in boosting trade and transport. It will also boost the region's economic growth, enhancing its ability to attract investment and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.

The completion of this viaduct is set to transform Laayoune into a key hub in Morocco's infrastructure network, consolidating its position as a strategic point on the country's economic map. With each new infrastructure project, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to a future of progress and modernity, showing the world its determination to move towards balanced and sustainable development.

This bridge, in addition to its practical function, symbolises a more interconnected and prosperous future for all regions of Morocco. As the southern provinces become better integrated into the country, Morocco as a whole becomes stronger, moving towards a brighter future for all its citizens.
