AEVECAR calls on the government to swiftly and fully transpose the RED III regulations
The Spanish Association of Fuel and Combustible Retailers, AEVECAR, calls on the government to complete the procedures for the full transposition of the RED III regulation as quickly as possible, with the necessary specificity and ambition to ensure that the system of fuel and renewable energy targets comes into force on 1 January 2027, This will avoid the competitive disadvantage that will arise with countries that are going to apply it in 2026.
AEVECAR supports a long-term approach that ensures the achievement of greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and guarantees a fair energy transition, for which the use of renewable fuels is essential, and insists on the need to promote and guarantee national competitiveness that favours investment and the decarbonisation of transport.
The commitment to renewable fuels offers Spain the opportunity to be a European leader in their production, and the implementation of the RED III regulation will be key to increasing Spain's competitiveness and contributing to greater long-term stability and legal certainty for the sector by including a reliable forecast of investments that will enable it to lead the way in renewable fuel production.
AEVECAR supports the request made by the Spanish Fuel Industry Association to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to eliminate measures that impose discriminatory burdens and create distortion in the Spanish market, placing domestic fuel manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage compared to fuel importers, which will weaken energy independence and discourage investment in Spanish refineries.
The fuel industry has announced investments of more than 16 billion euros by 2030, and the production of renewable fuels could create more than 54,000 high-quality jobs, both direct and indirect, helping to curb rural depopulation and promote agricultural activity. It is necessary to preserve the competitiveness of Spanish industry, which is a leader in Europe in the refining sector, while at the same time reducing energy dependence, which is overly reliant on geopolitical factors that are difficult to predict.
