Airseas opens Maritime Research Centre in Dakhla
The French company Airseas has opened a maritime research centre near the coastal city of Dakhla in the Moroccan Sahara region, with the aim of reducing ships' fuel consumption. This reduction is estimated to be as much as 20%, which will lead to significant economic savings.
Morocco is a pioneer in promoting economic development and employment in North Africa. In recent years, the country has invested in infrastructure and implemented policies that encourage foreign investment and economic growth. The Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region is an area with enormous economic potential and the opening of this research centre could be an important step towards the sustainable development of the region.
The project is part of Morocco's ambition to turn the region into an economic hub to boost employability and foster regional development. In this sense, the inauguration of the Airseas maritime research centre in Dakhla is an important step towards achieving this goal.
Airseas' investment of 50 million dirhams in the Dakhla Maritime Research Centre is an example of the company's commitment to economic development and innovation in Morocco. This figure reflects the significant economic efforts made in the region to promote growth and sustainable development.
The new complex will have modern facilities already used and implemented in the most important ports of the African continent and in ports of Northern European countries, such as the ports of Denmark, the Netherlands and the Baltic countries.
Among the key elements of the project is the "Seawing project". This plan proposes the inclusion of automated sails on ships of around 1,000 square metres which, by means of computer systems, will redirect themselves to generate more aerodynamic load and, therefore, reduce the consumption of the ships because they will "gain many efficiency points". The system uses AI-driven automated piloting to optimise the trajectory and maximise efficiency.
As for the complex's facilities, it will have more than 15 docks and a 2,400 square metre hangar where technical and electrical workshops will be installed to allow better control of conditions and better monitoring, not only of the weather, but also of maritime traffic.
The impact will not only be industrial, commercial and economic for the region, but it is expected that, both directly and indirectly, more than 30 jobs will be created.
Benefits and impact on the region
The Maritime Research Centre will have a positive impact on the region, creating direct and indirect jobs and generating income for the local economy. It will also promote innovation and technological development in the region, which in turn will improve the competitiveness and efficiency of local businesses. The installation of Airseas in Dakhla is a great incentive for companies from Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia to settle in the region. Settlement opportunities in Morocco and the Dakhla region include favourable foreign investment, free zones with tax and labour incentives, investment support, access to international markets, adequate infrastructure, skilled and available labour, and relatively low longevity costs.
The Maritime Research Centre will also have a significant impact on the region by promoting sustainable development and improving local infrastructure. It will also promote international cooperation in the region, establishing trade and cultural relations with other countries and regions, improving the region's image, attracting new investment and tourists, and creating more income and jobs.
The role of the government in boosting the region is proving to be key and is always one of the issues on the table due to the endless capacities for investment and development.
