Installation of smart devices in the United States

Avangrid, the US subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has installed more than 650 smart devices during 2025 through its distribution companies Central Maine Power (CMP), New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) in their respective areas.

Benefits of smart devices for the electricity grid

Smart devices provide real-time readings to energy control centres. When an outage occurs, operators can remotely section off circuits and redirect electricity.

This reduces outages to minutes rather than hours. The devices can restore service in as little as five minutes, which is especially valuable in rural and remote areas. They also minimise repair time for specialised crews by allowing them to focus on smaller areas to patrol and locate damage.

Modernisation of energy infrastructure in Maine and New York

The installation of these automated devices is part of a plan to modernise the energy infrastructure in Maine and New York, making it more resilient to increasingly frequent and extreme weather events. Other initiatives include regular inspections and maintenance of supports, as well as investments in substations and other projects.
