Bank Al-Maghrib's new banknotes reflect the development undertaken by Morocco
After the 100 dirham notes and new coins, Bank Al-Maghrib is giving a new design to the 200 dirham notes. The symbols on this new banknote are reminiscent of a modern Morocco whose path towards progress is marked by major structural projects.
The issue of the 200 dirham banknote is part of the new series of banknotes and coins that Bank Al-Maghrib is putting into circulation.
The new 200 dirham banknote was launched on Friday 12 January 2024, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the presentation of the Manifesto of Independence.
This is the new 200 dirham note
The new 200 dirham note born in 2024 retains its blue colour with a view of the Mohammed VI Tower and Marrakech-Menara International Airport on the back. It also highlights the economic and industrial development carried out under the wise leadership of King Mohammed VI, according to a BAM press release.
The themes chosen for the banknote's graphic representations are infrastructure, industry and development. The front of the banknote features a portrait of King Mohammed VI, the coat of arms of the Kingdom and a representation of the Mohammed VI cable-stayed bridge.
Inaugurated on 7 July 2016, the Mohammed VI bridge is the largest cable-stayed bridge in Africa and connects the city of Rabat with Salé. Designed in a modern style, the bridge features two 200-metre-high arched towers symbolising the new gateways to the two cities.
The reverse of the ticket features a stylised view of the Mohammed VI Tower and the Marrakech-Menara International Airport, as well as motifs symbolising Morocco's industrial and digital development.
This new banknote incorporates the most advanced technologies in terms of security features, such as the three-dimensional dynamic security thread, the colour-changing magnetic ink, the geometric pattern on both sides, as well as a recognition system for the visually impaired.
The obverse side of the cable-stayed bridge features the portrait of King Mohammed VI, the coat of arms of the Kingdom, as well as an architectural detail inspired by Moroccan gates.
Bank Al-Maghrib announced last November 2023 the launch of a new 100 dirham note, as well as new coins of 10 cents, 20 cents, 1/2 dirham, 1 dirham, 5 dirhams and 10 dirhams.
The new 100 dirham banknote reflects the development of the Sahara
The 100 dirham banknote launched on 24 November 2023 highlights the Sahara's cultural heritage, its socio-economic development and its openness towards Africa.
The front of the banknote features the portrait of King Mohammed VI, the coat of arms of the Kingdom, as well as architectural details inspired by the Moroccan gates and elegant arcades of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.
The reverse of the banknote features a stylised view of Laayoune's Mechouar Square and the Tiznit-Dajla highway, as well as a depiction of the traditional festivities of the Músim de Tan-Tan (the annual regional festival).
As for the new series of coins, the themes chosen are as follows:
- Agriculture for the 10 cent coin.
- Sustainable development and the environment for the 20 cent coin.
- Cultural diversity for the 1/2 dirham coin.
- National sovereignty for the 1 dirham coin.
- Development of the Sahara for the 5 dirham coin.
- Development and infrastructure for the 10 dirham coin.
It should be noted that all the design and production stages of the new series of banknotes and coins were carried out exclusively by Moroccan experts operating at Dar As-Sikkah (the mint).
