The North African country is consolidating its position as one of the main global suppliers of fresh blueberries, diversifying and quadrupling its exports

Morocco has reached a significant milestone in blueberry exports during the 2023-2024 season, which ran from July to June. According to EastFruit data, the country has not only expanded its presence in the main international export markets for fresh blueberries, but has also experienced a remarkable growth in its exported volumes.

During the recently concluded season, Morocco exported a total of 67,300 tonnes of fresh blueberries, representing an increase of 25% compared to the previous season. This growth is even more impressive when considering that Moroccan exports of blueberries have quadrupled since the 2017-2018 season.

Despite the fact that Spain's share as the main destination for Moroccan blueberries has decreased from 80% to 30%, the Iberian country remains the most important market for these fruits in the 2023-2024 season. According to La Vie Éco, exports to Spain increased by 11%, reaching 20,100 tonnes.

Other European markets also showed positive trends. Moroccan exports to the United Kingdom increased by almost a third, reaching 14,600 tonnes. To the Netherlands, shipments grew by 42% to 14,500 tonnes, while exports to Germany and France increased by 25% and 19%, respectively, reaching 4,300 tonnes and 3,900 tonnes.

The scope of Moroccan blueberry exports is not limited to Europe. In the Middle East, Morocco exported 1,800 tonnes of blueberries, with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain as the main buyers. In addition, Moroccan exporters managed to increase their shipments to North America, delivering 360 tonnes to the United States and 900 tonnes to Canada.

In Asia, Southeast Asia remains a key destination for Moroccan blueberry exports, with Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia as the main markets. Morocco is now among the top five blueberry suppliers in this region, consolidating its position in the Asian market.

This remarkable growth in blueberry exports underlines Morocco's ability to adapt to the demands of the global market, diversifying its destinations and consolidating its position in an increasingly competitive agricultural sector. The expansion of its exports beyond Europe, reaching markets in the Middle East, North America and Asia, demonstrates the effectiveness of the commercial and logistical strategies implemented by Moroccan exporters.

Moreover, the success in increasing export volumes despite the reduction of the Spanish market share is evidence of the resilience and competitiveness of the Moroccan blueberry sector. This development not only strengthens the country's agricultural economy, but also positions Morocco as a key player in the global supply of fresh blueberries, with encouraging prospects for future seasons.
