Iberdrola España and the Community of Madrid inaugurate the largest fast-charging station in Madrid
Iberdrola España and the Community of Madrid are strengthening their commitment to electric mobility with the commissioning of one of the largest charging hubs in Spain and the largest in Madrid in terms of fast-charging points for electric vehicles. Located in Leganés, the station features 15 out of a total of 47 charging points that can charge a battery to 80% in under fifteen minutes or provide a range of 200 kilometres with just five minutes of charging. In addition, there are 10 fast-charging points capable of charging within thirty minutes and a further 22 semi-fast charging points.
Iberdrola España has been responsible for the installation of the charging points and will also handle the operation and maintenance of the station. The facility includes 47 parking bays, all equipped with solar panels to maximise energy efficiency and to supply renewable local energy to up to 100 families or businesses, helping them save on electricity bills.
Specifically, there will be eight 350kW and seven 240kW (ultra-fast) bays, another ten with 60kW (fast) and 22 with 22kW (semi-fast). As it is located next to the Parque Polvoranca commuter train station in Leganés, users will be able to choose the type of charge depending on their parking time.
The project is part of the incentive programme for unique electric mobility initiatives (MOVES Singular Projects II Programme), within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE).
The Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Local Administration of the Community of Madrid, Miguel Ángel García Martín, officially opened the new station alongside representatives from Iberdrola España and members of the municipal corporation of Leganés.
García Martín stated, “This charging station adds to the one already operating in Pozuelo de Alarcón and the one recently announced by the President on Paseo de la Castellana, consolidating the Community of Madrid’s leadership in sustainable mobility in Spain.” He also noted, “This represents a major step forward for Leganés, as well as a great achievement and a source of pride for the region.”
Antonio Armengot, Iberdrola Clientes’ delegate in Madrid, said, “Electric mobility requires public-private partnerships to accelerate citizen wellbeing and improve urban air quality and sustainable development. At Iberdrola España, we were pioneers in our commitment to electric mobility and today we are leaders in public charging, with over 9,500 operational points located on main roads and in cities, as well as in small towns and on secondary roads.”
The Mayor of Leganés, Miguel Ángel Recuenco, expressed his satisfaction that “new investments are coming to the city, and even more so when they are sustainable from an economic, environmental and social perspective. The installation of this charging hub fully meets all these criteria. In addition to promoting sustainable mobility with electric vehicle charging points, it also includes a photovoltaic solar system that will benefit local families by helping them save on electricity bills without the need for their own installation or investment.”
The Leganés station is the second public land charging hub from the public company Planifica Madrid, which Iberdrola España will operate under a lease arrangement. Located in a strategic area with a catchment of 750,000 inhabitants, covering the cities of Leganés, Getafe, Fuenlabrada and Alcorcón, as well as Parque Polvoranca commuter station and connections to the M-406 (north), M-407 (west), M-409 (east) and M-50 (south) motorways, the station will serve Madrid residents, travellers and visitors alike.
The facility spans 1,260 square metres, with a buildable area of 1,238 square metres designated for tertiary and service use. It is part of the Urban Planning Action Programme (PAU) of Arroyo Culebro, a consolidated residential area with over 3,600 homes and direct access to the M-50.
The Electromobility Barometer published by ANFAC (Spanish Association of Car and Truck Manufacturers) for the fourth quarter of 2024 reported a 32% increase in the number of publicly accessible charging points during 2024, with 9,424 more than the previous year, reaching a total of 38,725 operational points. Madrid leads the country in electrification progress, with a score of 35.3 out of 100, well above the national average of 21.4.
Pioneer and leader in mobility
With more than 9,500 public charging points certified as 100% renewable, Iberdrola España operates the largest electric mobility network in Spain. Including both public and private charging points, the company’s network exceeds 45,000 chargers.
The mobility plan launched by the company in 2016 was the first of its kind. Its public infrastructure network is being developed along motorways and corridors as well as in cities and small towns, with the aim of providing at least one fast-charging station every less than 50 km.
