Iberdrola España now offers solar communities in 34 municipalities in Extremadura, with a total of 117 installations of this type. Around twenty of these installations are located in the most populated towns in the region, including Cáceres, the first solar city in Spain, thus demonstrating the expansion of this initiative thanks to the success of this type of energy self-consumption.
In this way, Extremadura is consolidating its position as a leading exponent in the installation of solar communities and in the adoption of energy self-consumption, a form of electricity supply that allows savings to be made on bills while promoting sustainability and respect for the environment.
Extremadura, a leading exponent of self-consumption installations
An example of the penetration of this type of self-consumption can be seen in the region's large municipalities. Cáceres, Plasencia, Navalmoral de la Mata, Coria, Miajadas, Talayuela and Jaraíz de la Vera already have solar communities. The province of Badajoz has a similar balance, with 15 large municipalities in which it is possible to join these communities: Badajoz, Mérida, Don Benito, Almendralejo, Villanueva de la Serena, Zafra, Montijo, Villafranca de los Barros, Jerez de los Caballeros, Los Santos de Maimona, Guareña and Fuente del Maestre.
Extremadura is a pioneer in these installations throughout the country. Cáceres was the first solar city in Spain and Cedillo, the first municipality in the country. This has increased the region's visibility thanks to the various national and international recognitions awarded to Extremadura.
Overall, Iberdrola España offers solar communities to 80% of Extremadura's municipalities with more than 6,000 inhabitants. In addition, in smaller towns, half of Extremadura's inhabitants are within the required two-kilometre radius and can already participate in a solar community.
Easy and clean energy
The solar community system relies, on the one hand, on the owner of a roof where solar panels are installed, an unused space that begins to generate 100% clean energy that helps him to reduce his electricity bill. And on the other hand, neighbours living within a radius of less than two kilometres can self-consume the renewable energy generated without any investment or installation. In addition, any family that joins this model has no permanence.
Anyone interested in joining a solar community can do so in person at the service points, via the solar communities website or by calling the free telephone number 900 92 33 33.
