Iberdrola España recognised at the RENMAD Storage 2025 Awards for its leadership in innovation

Iberdrola España has been one of the major players at the RENMAD Almacenamiento 2025 Awards, receiving two awards recognising its leadership in the development of energy storage solutions that accelerate the energy transition and reinforce the sustainability of the electricity system.
The award for ‘Storage Project of the Year’ recognises the sector's most emblematic initiative in terms of impact, scalability and added value for the electricity system. Iberdrola España has been recognised for the reversible pumping system in Torrejón-Valdecañas, a key infrastructure for the massive storage of renewable energy and the guarantee of a stable electricity supply.
‘The Valdecañas project is a great example of how it is possible to integrate the operation of batteries with their rapid response to the grid in the same power station. With the hydroelectric power station it is possible to have a slower response but a much greater energy capacity,’ said Fernando Perán, responsible for pumped storage projects on the Tagus River, in relation to the Extremadura project.
The Torrejón-Valdecañas facilities have a total power output of 290 MW and include a hybridised battery in Valdecañas with 15 MW and 7.5 MWh of stored energy. Both infrastructures are key to guaranteeing the flexibility of the electricity system, improving the integration of renewables and advancing the decarbonisation of the energy mix.
Fernando Perán, storage personality of the year
For the ‘Storage Personality’ category, RENMAD 2025 has honoured Fernando Perán Montero, a professional whose career has been decisive for the development of energy storage in Spain. His technical and strategic leadership in the deployment of innovative solutions within the company, as well as his key role in the evolution of the sector, have been valued by the jury.
These awards reinforce Iberdrola España's commitment to innovation, technological development and talent as pillars for moving towards a more sustainable, efficient and decarbonised energy system.
Today, Iberdrola España has 18 pumped-storage hydroelectric power stations with a total installed capacity of 6,000 MW, making it the national leader in this technology and one of the European benchmarks.
