The Iberdrola group began its commitment to renewable energies more than two decades ago; as a fundamental pillar on which to build its clean, reliable and intelligent business model

Thanks to this vision, the company is today a world leader in renewable energies, with 38,000 MW of renewable capacity installed worldwide by the end of 2021, and is a leader in the energy transition towards a low-emission economy.

This commitment is reflected in its investment plan to 2025 -now extended to 2030-. It aims to double its renewable capacity to 60 GW in 2025, rising to 95 GW in 2030. This solid growth is confirmed by the more than 7,800 MW of renewable capacity under construction at the end of the twelve months of 2021.

Australia, Iberdrola's most ambitious project

Iberdrola's plans include projects in Australia, a country that wants to play an important role in meeting the goal of decarbonising the economy, and which also has the potential to become a major hub for green hydrogen and an export corridor for green materials.

Iberdrola recently acquired the rights to the Mount James wind farm in North Queensland. This becomes the largest onshore wind farm in the world for the company; with 1,000 MW and one of the key clean energy assets of its growth strategy in the region.

Currently, environmental studies have already been completed on the 50,000 hectares of the site, which will allow the wind farm to be designed avoiding environmentally or heritage sensitive areas.

Iberdrola's competitive position in the Australian market is distinguished by a willingness to invest not only in renewable capacity, but also in technologies that enable clean energy growth, customer-focused product offerings and a broader energy infrastructure. To date, this has been achieved by offering commercial and industrial customers fully firm supply agreements backed by renewable power generation.

Other Iberdrola projects in Australia

The Iberdrola group has become one of the leaders in the Australian renewable energy market following the acquisition of Infigen Energy in 2020, now Iberdrola Australia. It is a vertically integrated renewable energy company with 940 MW of installed capacity.

Late last year it acquired Autonomous Energy, a leading smart solutions company. Iberdrola also has a portfolio of more than 3GW of projects in Australia in various technologies, at different stages of development and located in the states of New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland.

More initiatives, more emblems, more objectives

As part of its most emblematic projects in the region, Iberdrola is building Port Augusta, in South Australia, its first hybrid wind-solar plant in the world. This is a renewable facility that will combine a 210 MW wind farm with an installed capacity of 210 MW and a 107 MW photovoltaic plant that will generate enough clean energy to supply the annual demand of 180,000 Australian homes once it is operational.

This project will make Iberdrola the market leader in the South Australian region in terms of installed capacity. The company will also sell the energy produced by Port Augusta to industrial customers in the country.
