Iberdrola Spain has launched the first electric vehicle charging points resulting from the contract awarded by Murcia City Council last December, under which the company will provide 190 charging points for cars in the city.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, visited the new charging equipment installed on Avenida de los Pinos, next to Iberdrola Spain's offices in the capital, where he was welcomed by the company's Key Accounts and Public Administrations Manager for the Region of Murcia, Enrique Planells, and by the Institutional Delegate, Miguel Ángel Cerdán. The Councillor for Urban Planning, Antonio Navarro, was also present.

In accordance with the contract awarded by Murcia City Council, Iberdrola Spain will install 98 electric vehicle charging stations, 40 of which will be fast chargers with a power output of 50 kilowatts (kW) and the rest will be semi-fast chargers (22 kW), enabling up to 190 vehicles to be charged simultaneously.

José Ballesta highlighted that ‘the Murcia City Council has adopted many initiatives in its firm commitment to the environment. We believe that the future of this city must be a green, shared future in which we move forward in the same direction’.

For his part, Enrique Planells applauded the Murcia City Council's commitment ‘to the ambitious plan developed to promote electric mobility in the city and thus contribute to improving air quality in cities’. Planells also highlighted that this public-private partnership ‘allows companies to accelerate the development of a charging network that is accessible to all users and helps to promote emission-free transport that increases the well-being of citizens’.

All the points installed by Iberdrola are powered by 100% green energy from renewable sources with a guarantee of origin (GdOS), which helps to combat climate change and achieve a transition to a model independent of fossil fuels.

Users can access the company's network through the Iberdrola Public Charging App, where they can view and geolocate verified information on all chargers, check their operation in real time, and reserve and pay from their mobile phones. In addition, the new 50 kW chargers will have credit/debit card payment terminals to facilitate the user experience.

With more than 9,500 public charging points with 100% renewable energy, Iberdrola Spain's electric mobility network is the largest in the country. In total, between public and private charging points, the company's network has more than 45,000 chargers.

The mobility plan, launched by the company in 2016, was a pioneer in its implementation. Its public infrastructure design is being developed on motorways and corridors as well as in cities and small towns with the aim of having at least one fast charging station every 50 km.
