Iberdrola and Vodafone sign three new clean power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Germany, Portugal and Spain. In addition, the two companies pledge to work together to pursue new PPA opportunities and sustainability initiatives in Europe.

The new agreements will enable Iberdrola to supply Vodafone with a total of 410 gigawatt hours (GWh) of photovoltaic (PV) power in three countries, helping to accelerate Vodafone's path to zero energy and increasing its energy security.  This energy is equivalent to the annual electricity demand of more than 117,000 households.

For Vodafone Spain, it has been agreed to supply 280 GWh per year from the newly built Cedillo photovoltaic plant in Cáceres (Spain).

For Vodafone Portugal, the PPA will provide 80 GWh per year from the newly built solar PV plant in Velilla, located in Palencia (Spain).

For Vodafone Germany, a PPA has been agreed to supply all the power from the Boldekow PV plant, Iberdrola's first solar project to be developed in the country. The plant will have a total capacity of 56 MWp and will be built in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It will be fully operational in 2024.

In addition, and as part of the common goal of both companies to reduce CO2 emissions and meet energy transition targets, Iberdrola has already installed more than 140 electric chargers at Vodafone's main facilities in Spain and provides them with management and optimisation services for their operation.

Aitor Moso, Iberdrola's Global Customer Director, said: "Both Iberdrola and Vodafone are committed to connecting customers and communities to a cleaner, smarter future. As a global promoter of clean energy, we have projects around the world that enable us to support multinational companies like Vodafone that are committed to sustainability throughout their business operations. Agreements with companies like Vodafone are increasingly important to enable the construction of new renewable energy projects, and we now look forward to accelerating the delivery of these solar PV plants."

Joakim Reiter, Vodafone Group Head of External and Corporate Affairs, said: "These agreements across Europe underline Vodafone's commitment to ensuring that our customers continue to benefit from electricity from 100% renewable supply. They also provide Vodafone with greater energy security and long-term price certainty as we work towards achieving net zero energy operations by 2030".

"To obtain net zero targets in line with the Paris Agreement, the world faces the daunting task of ensuring that almost 90% of the world's electricity needs are generated from renewable and carbon-free sources. Today's announcement is a great example of how telecoms operators, like Vodafone, can help accelerate this essential transition by becoming key players in the deployment of renewable energy," he said.

Both companies are exploring other options for long-term energy supply contracts to support Vodafone's ambitious emissions reduction targets in Europe, as well as other sustainable projects to further decarbonise their operations in the future.

Securing a long-term buyer for clean electricity production allows Iberdrola to accelerate the construction and commissioning of projects. This relationship reinforces Iberdrola's strategy of entering into bilateral agreements that promote the supply of energy at competitive and stable prices to large customers who are committed to clean and sustainable consumption.

Leaders in long-term contracts

As a pioneer in offering clean energy solutions to industrial partners, Iberdrola manages 78,000 GWh/year of PPA agreements worldwide and works with companies in a wide range of sectors.

Europe's leading electricity company and the second largest in the world also maintains alliances through PPAs with Amazon, Telefónica, Mercadona, Holcim, Heineken, ABInBev, Apple, De Acero, VW-SEAT, Mercedes Benz and Renault, among others. In fact, in recent weeks Iberdrola has closed two PPAs with the steelmaker Stahl Holding Saar (SHS) and the Salzgitter Group, which will be supplied by Iberdrola's Baltic Eagle offshore wind project, which is being built in the Baltic Sea.
