IE University celebrates the Ibero-American and Asian Economic Journalism Awards 2022
IE University has presented the Ibero-American and Asian Economic Journalism Awards 2022, now in their ninth and seventh edition, respectively. The awards ceremony, attended by the winning journalists, was held at the Palacio de Linares, headquarters of Casa de América, with the sponsorship of CAF -development bank of Latin America- and the support of CNN en Español, Iberia and Cinco Días.
Each year, these awards recognise the best journalistic works with an economic focus published in Latin America and Asia. In this edition, more than 150 articles were entered and evaluated by a jury made up of executives from IE University and CAF, as well as journalists who have won awards in previous editions. The winners received a sculpture designed for the competition by the artist Miguel Panadero.
The awards ceremony was presented by Gabriela Frías, journalist for CNN en Español, and was attended by Manuel Muñiz, Provost of IE University; Enrique Ojeda, Director of Casa de América; Ignacio Corlazzoli, CAF Manager for Europe, Asia and the Middle East; Víctor Moneo, Director of Latam and Institutional Agreements at Iberia; and José Antonio Vega, Director of Cinco Días.
"It is important to recognise and highlight the value of quality journalistic work in the field of economics. In this space, journalism intersects with academia as it helps us to understand the world, its complexity and development. Today's award-winning work fulfils this important mission," said Manuel Muñiz, Provost of IE University.
Ignacio Corlazzoli, CAF's Manager for Europe, Asia and the Middle East, pointed out that "to accompany the transcendental processes that Latin America is currently experiencing, it is essential to have journalism that has a vocation for public service, that aims for the highest possible degree of objectivity and that looks after the interests of citizens. CAF's commitment to quality journalism is closely linked to the mission of promoting the wellbeing of all citizens and sustainable development".
The impact of innovation and technology on economic growth in Latin America has been the focus of this year's Latin American Economic Journalism Awards. The article A paisa who created a unicorn won the award for Best Article in the Non-Daily Press category. This article, written by José Caparroso and published in the Colombian magazines Semana and Dinero, analyses the profile of David Vélez, the Colombian entrepreneur behind the Fintech Nubank. The award for Best Article in the Daily Press category went this year to Claudia Inga for her article 'Labour regulation for mobile apps'. Published in El Comercio Perú, the article analyses the legal changes and their impact on new forms of work.
The jury singled out the newspaper La Prensa (Panama) and the magazine Emprendedor (Mexico) for their work in promoting economic and entrepreneurial culture in Latin America, and they received the award for Best Daily Press Media and Best Non-Daily Press Media, respectively.
In addition, as part of the 7th Asian Business Journalism Awards, VietNamNet received the award for Best Regional Media in Asia. The award for Best Economic Article in Asia went to Rey Elbo for his article 'What's the best employee feedback mechanism' published in BusinessWorld in the Philippine Islands. The jury also awarded the article 'Latin America, Another Lost Decade' written by Wu Chen and published in The Economic Observer of China as Best Latin American Economic Article in Asia.
