Iberdrola plans to double global electrification and strengthen energy security as it celebrates its 125th anniversary, with plans to become the largest electricity company in the world

Iberdrola's chairman, Ignacio Galán, said in an interview with the prestigious Spanish business newspaper Expansión, on the occasion of his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos 2026, that in a complex geopolitical and economic environment, Iberdrola's clear commitment to electrification "means efficiency, lower costs and greater security for citizens. And networks are a fundamental factor in that energy security.‘ Galán affirms: ’We in the electricity sector have a unique opportunity: a sector that has traditionally been defensive has become a vector for economic growth, and electricity networks are the best example of this."

Ignacio Galán sets no limits on the company's growth: "A year ago, we knew we could exceed €100 billion in market capitalisation, and today we are convinced that we can become the largest electricity company in the world. If today we are worth €125 billion with only 20% of energy consumption electrified, how much could we be worth if we electrified 40% or 50%, as the most conservative estimates indicate?‘

In such a significant year for Iberdrola, its 125th anniversary, Ignacio Galán says that ’it is a source of pride and a responsibility" to lead the company. ‘Firstly, to those who preceded us on this 125-year journey. Also to the more than 46,000 people who work at Iberdrola today. And, of course, to the society we have been serving for more than a century. We serve 100 million people who today demand more than ever electricity-based solutions to grow and develop.’
