Indra reinforces its commitment to the environment and brings forward its emissions reduction targets by a decade
On the occasion of the United Nations World Environment Day, celebrated today June 5th, Indra makes public its achievements and efforts to contribute to curb climate change and protect the planet. The company has advanced its science-based emission reduction targets by a decade, renewed and extended its ISO 14001 environmental certification, has an ambitious and realistic climate transition plan for all the group's activities and continues to promote the development of technological solutions that contribute to curb global warming and protect our environment.
‘At Indra, we want to raise awareness of the importance of strengthening our commitment to the environment without delay. Innovation and technology are key to achieve sustainable development and at Indra we have solutions to help our clients on this path, with increasingly eco-efficient products, with systems to make air traffic or transport less polluting, to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy or to protect natural resources with AI or even from space‘, said Manuel Ausaverri, Indra's Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and head of Sustainability of the group.
Indra, the world's most sustainable technology company according to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and one of the leading companies in the fight against climate change according to the Carbon Disclosure Project, assumed in 2020 the UN's climate objectives to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5ºC, according to measurable and science-based targets (SBTi). It set targets to reduce its energy-related emissions by 50% by 2030, achieve zero energy-related emissions by 2040 and extend decarbonisation to its entire supply chain to become carbon neutral by 2050.
Thanks to the actions it has implemented in recent years, the company has managed to reduce its own emissions by 26% in just four years and to bring these objectives forward ten years, to neutralise emissions in its own operations by 2030 and to be Net Zero by 2040, i.e. to reduce all emissions in its value chain to the closest level to zero technically possible, neutralising the remaining emissions, and not achieving neutrality solely through offsetting measures.
The improvement of energy efficiency; the use of green energy, which already accounts for 88% of the group's energy; teleworking measures; an internal price on carbon, which considers the CO2 factor in the company's decision making; the drive to contract greener suppliers and the training of suppliers in the calculation of their emissions; or the consideration of eco-design criteria to reduce the environmental impact of products, have allowed Indra to accelerate its roadmap for decarbonisation.
Indra has also renewed this year its presence in the list of European climate leaders, which have most reduced greenhouse gas emissions, compiled by the Financial Times and the research company Statista, in which Indra has positioned as the first Spanish technology company and the fifth in Europe in emissions reduction.
ISO 14001 certification
Another key factor was the ISO 14001 environmental management certification, which Indra recently renewed and which covers Indra's main production centres and offices: 34 work centres in Spain, the UK, Italy, Portugal, Colombia, Brazil and Peru; a total of 29 group companies in seven countries and 100% of the manufacturing centres in Spain. Thus, 81% of Indra and Minsait's more than 57,000 professionals worldwide work in environmentally certified centres, 96% in the case of Spain.
To obtain this certification, it is necessary to pass an audit, carried out by AENOR, which guarantees that environmental legislation is complied with and best practices are applied, with high standards on issues such as carbon emissions, energy consumption, waste management, water use and employee environmental awareness.
Indra has also renewed the European EMAS Regulation (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) for its Alcobendas headquarters and has Carbon Footprint certifications (ISO 14064) for its main companies.
