The Moroccan kingdom has chosen the companies Ineco and CID to carry out the necessary studies for the urban train service in the cities of Tangiers and Tetouan

Ineco is joining Morocco's urban development by developing the railway works that will improve connectivity between the cities of Tangier and Tetouan. The Spanish national company will also be in charge of the connections with the football stadiums, with a view to the 2030 World Cup, and the airport of the city of Tangier.

The choice of Ineco by the Alaouite administration is part of the good relations between the two countries. In addition to the urban development works, the company will be in charge of the feasibility study for a new train line connecting the city of Tangier with Tetouan.

The contract was partly awarded thanks to the official trip of the Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, who conveyed to the Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil, and the Minister of Infrastructure and Water, Nizar Baraka, the intentions of Spanish companies to work and collaborate with Moroccan companies in the field of transport.

The Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) awarded a contract that will last 14 months.  Ineco, together with the local company CID, will focus on analysing four main aspects: expanding the Tangier-Mellousa line and creating a new route to Chefarrat; assessing the possible construction of a conventional line connecting the south of Tangier with the football stadium (World Cup 2030 venue), the airport and Gueznaia; linking this corridor with the Mohammed VI industrial park; and establishing a rail connection between Tetouan and Cherrafat.

This project is part of Morocco's Railway Strategy 2040 (PRM2040), which is a long-term plan to improve the country's railway network and its different parts, based on the transport needs that will arise in the future.

PRM2040 will boost the transport network connecting key nodes through high-speed, regional and shuttle trains, promoting development throughout the country and supporting territorial development policies.

The plan aims to increase rail connectivity in Morocco from 23 to 43 cities and connect a dozen ports and 15 airports, with a budget of 375 billion dirhams (about 34.7 billion euros). The country plans to generate 300,000 jobs and expand public transport to reach 87% of the population, up from 51% today.

‘This contract is our first railway project in Morocco and consolidates our presence in the country where we are already working in the airport sector. It is an important step that we hope will continue to open up opportunities for the Spanish railway industry,’ said Sergio Vázquez Torrón, president of Ineco.

It is important that this step is maintained over time so that the Spanish railway industry has more opportunities. This project represents the largest contract in the company's history in Morocco and establishes an opportunity for collaboration with the CID.

The Moroccan National Airports Office (ONDA) contacted Ineco to develop a plan to improve the facilities and terminals of the Mohammed V International Airport of Casablanca.

The contract also includes the construction of 85 kilometres of new tracks and requires studies for railway operation until 2040, considering the connection with the existing network. The objective is to identify current problems, define the size and design of the infrastructure required to handle the increase in air traffic in the future.
