Mauritania announces opening of Smara-Bir Mogrein border crossing with Morocco

With the aim of boosting trade and strengthening cooperation

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania has officially announced the creation of 82 new border crossings throughout its territory with the aim of promoting trade and strengthening cooperation with neighbouring countries, especially with the Kingdom of Morocco.

Among the most prominent crossing points is Bir Mogrein, which connects the towns of Smara and Guelta Zemmur, as well as other similar points in the Moroccan Sahara. Also of note is the F'dérik pass, which links the Mauritanian town of F'dérik with the towns of Auserd and Boujdour.

This joint initiative between Mauritania and Morocco is part of the strengthening of their bilateral relations and contributes to facilitating cross-border trade, as well as promoting the development of infrastructure in border areas.

The strong relations between Mauritania and Morocco have been characterised by close cooperation in various fields, political, economic and security. Over the years, the two countries have worked together to strengthen their bilateral ties, driven by common interests in regional stability. 

Economic cooperation between the two countries has increased in recent years, especially in areas such as trade, infrastructure and energy. In this regard, Mauritania and Morocco have promoted joint projects that facilitate trade and promote the economic development of border areas. ​
