The Kingdom of Morocco consolidates its position as an African tourism powerhouse

The Kingdom of Morocco welcomed more than 13 million tourists in the first eight months of 2025. The Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatima-Zahra Ammor, highlighted that 33% stay in the country for between two weeks and a month, compared to 21% in 2019. This is the highest tourism figure ever achieved by the North African country.

The figures presented by Minister Ammor were presented at a meeting between the Ministry of Tourism and the National Tourism Confederation (CNT). At the meeting, preparations for the Football World Cup, which Morocco will host together with Spain and Portugal, were also discussed.

In the summer months alone, 4.6 million tourists arrived, 6% more than in 2024. This is a great achievement because, according to the World Tourism Organisation, the normal increase for a country is 5% in 2025.

As a result, tourism revenues increased by 13% at the end of July, according to the minister. In the first eight months of 2025, there was a 15% increase compared to 2024.

According to Bladi.net, revenue from France increased by 5.1% compared to the previous year, revenue from Spain increased by 4% and revenue from Italy increased by 5.2%. This makes them the countries that invest the most in travel to Morocco.

In terms of domestic tourism, there was an 8% increase at the end of July. In line with this data, 25% fewer Moroccans travelled abroad. Ammor concluded that Moroccans increasingly prefer to spend their holidays in their own country.

The tourism sector is very important for the Moroccan economy as it is an economic driver and contributes to social development by generating employment and investment, according to Fátima-Zahra Ammor.

"This dynamic reinforces our ambition to position Morocco as a high value-added destination. We are therefore investing in tourism promotion, which is an essential lever for stimulating spending, extending stays and retaining tourists," the minister explained.

The growth in tourism values is due to several factors: improved air connections, the development of hotel facilities and the diversification of destinations (beach, culture, sport, etc.).

In the case of air connections, Ryanair, which announced its departure from several Spanish airports, praised those in Morocco, saying that they are efficient and promote the development of air traffic.

In addition, the Kingdom of Morocco has committed to increasing the volume of tourists from China in a partnership between the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) and China Eastern Airlines. This is part of one of the strategies established in Asia.

Throughout this year, the Kingdom of Morocco has been improving its hospitality offering by building ‘Semi-Detached Residences’ and establishing quality criteria that will be renewed every five years.

But if there is one thing that has always attracted curious travellers, it is the diversity of the Moroccan territory. From the north, with its bright coastal cities such as Tangier, to cities steeped in history and labyrinths such as Fez, to buildings that the locals are proud of, such as the Hassan II Mosque.

The minister also stressed that the priorities are to maintain the country's current growth momentum, commit to operational excellence and strengthen territorial equity.
