More than 70% of insurers with AI plan to adjust their systems to new European regulations
Artificial Intelligence has established itself as a key tool for the Spanish insurance sector, which is moving towards a more predictive, efficient and customer-centric model. According to the 10th Artificial Intelligence and Data Thermometer in the insurance sector, produced by ICEA in collaboration with Minsait (Indra Group), eight out of ten Spanish insurers have already implemented Artificial Intelligence projects, a figure that rises to 90% of the sample if those currently in the development phase are included, reflecting growing technological maturity in the sector.
The study, representing 76.5% of the market, shows that AI is transforming the entire value chain, from underwriting and risk analysis to customer service and fraud detection. In addition, 74% of insurers already developing projects with this technology have a specific plan to adapt to the European AI Act, demonstrating the sector's commitment to governance and the responsible use of these technologies.
‘Spanish insurers are moving towards a model in which data and artificial intelligence are at the centre of decision-making,’ explained Óscar Fernández, research technician at ICEA. ‘This allows them to gain agility, better anticipate customer needs and optimise internal processes. It is a profound change: artificial intelligence is no longer a technological project, but a new way of managing the business.’
The emergence of agentic AI: towards intelligent and proactive ecosystems
The report notes that 46.4% of entities working with AI already use intelligent agents in real processes, while 28.6% are exploring their applicability or developing pilots.
These agents mark a turning point in the evolution of Artificial Intelligence. They are systems capable of learning, achieving pre-defined business objectives and acting autonomously within processes, collaborating with people and multiplying the operational capacity of organisations.
‘Until now, Artificial Intelligence was reactive, responding to what we asked it to do,’ said Andrés Duque, head of AI in Financial Services at Minsait. 'With AI agents, we are taking a step further: they are proactive. We set the objectives and they can work to achieve them autonomously, accompanying processes and taking on tasks that humans cannot do. They do not replace human talent and intelligence, but rather expand it.'
'At Minsait, we are promoting ecosystems of agents that collaborate with each other and with people, creating more dynamic, efficient and sustainable organisations,' added Duque. ‘The true value of this technology lies in its ability to free up time and human potential, strengthening the link between innovation, purpose and productivity.’
With this advance, the Spanish insurance sector is consolidating its position among the most advanced in Europe in the adoption of artificial intelligence, reinforcing its competitiveness and leadership in innovation. The combination of operational efficiency, responsible technology and strategic vision is defining a new era for insurers, in which collaboration between people and intelligent systems is becoming the driving force for change.
