Morocco and Germany sign employment pact to boost skilled workforce
Morocco and Germany have signed a landmark agreement that aims to employ 10,000 skilled Moroccans in Germany, especially in the field of fibre optic deployment, Morocco World News reports. The agreement, which was signed in July 2023 by Morocco's National Agency for Employment and Skills Development (ANAPEC) and Geodisia - the German subsidiary of the Altice Group - is expected to benefit both countries by addressing their respective labour market challenges and fostering the exchange of technological know-how.
Germany is experiencing labour shortages, particularly in the construction, engineering, IT and healthcare industries. According to a study by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (IW), Germany will need an additional 440,000 skilled workers per year until 2030 to meet its economic needs. The study further concludes that immigration is necessary to preserve Germany's competitiveness and innovation because the domestic workforce is insufficient to make up for this shortfall.
The Morocco-Germany employment pact is based on a mutually beneficial approach that aims to match supply and demand for skilled labour in both countries. The identification, training and selection of capable Moroccan candidates wishing to work in Germany will be the responsibility of ANAPEC. Geodisia will provide them with employment opportunities in the fibre optic deployment industry, one of the crucial fields for infrastructure growth and digital transformation.
The agreement also calls for the exchange of technology and the upgrading of Moroccan workers' skills. Geodisia will provide them with language training and assistance in obtaining German qualifications and certifications valid in the German labour market.
In addition, the workers will benefit from Geodisia's expertise in fibre optic installation, which is considered a strategic asset for both nations.
The employment agreement between Morocco and Germany is expected to benefit the economies and societies of both nations. The pact will help Morocco's unemployment rate to decrease, especially among recent graduates who find it difficult to find a job that matches their skills and aspirations. In addition, the agreement will enable Moroccan workers to gain new credentials and skills that will improve their employability and career prospects.
The agreement will help Germany address its labour shortage, particularly in the area of fibre optic deployment, which is crucial for its digital transformation and economic expansion.
The Morocco-Germany employment pact is a milestone in bilateral relations and a model for international cooperation.
