During a visit to Morocco last March, the Spanish Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, reiterated Spain's interest in the tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar, a "strategic" project that will be the main point at the next high-level meeting between Morocco and Spain.

During his trip to the Kingdom, Puente informed the Moroccan Minister of Transport, Mohammed Abdeljalil, and the Minister of Infrastructures and Water, Nizar Baraka, of the interest of Spanish companies in participating in projects to develop the transport sector in Morocco, particularly in the tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar.

During this meeting, both parties stressed the strategic nature of the tunnel project - studies of which are underway - and agreed to develop a joint communication plan. The next Spanish-Moroccan Joint Commission, the date of which is not yet known, will address this initiative and will allow progress to be made in defining the project, according to La Razón.

"The studies of the project, launched by the two countries forty years ago, will be promoted," said Raquel Sánchez, former Spanish Minister of Transport during the last Spain-Morocco Summit held in Rabat in 2023. Sánchez pointed out that this is a strategic project for Spain and Morocco "but also for Europe and Africa".

According to preliminary studies, the 42-kilometre-long tunnel will allow the transport of passengers and goods with shuttle trains for vehicles and lorries, as well as conventional passenger and goods trains between Europe and Africa. The aim of the project is to facilitate the movement of people and goods between the two continents.
