Morocco is positioning itself as one of Africa's most promising mining powers thanks to its enormous mineral wealth and a strategy focused on the exploration and processing of these resources. A recent report in the magazine Daily Galaxy has revealed that Morocco's subsoil is home to more than 70 strategic minerals, which has boosted foreign investment and consolidated the country as a key player in the global mining industry.

Morocco's main mineral reserves are found in regions such as Guelmim, the eastern area and the Sahara. These areas concentrate deposits of rare metals in Jebel Tropic, helium in Guercif, and gold and copper in the Anti-Atlas. The exploration and extraction of these resources is being carried out by the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, in collaboration with countries such as Japan, South Korea, Germany and the United States.

One of the most notable aspects of the Moroccan mining sector is its focus on the transformation of minerals prior to export. Unlike other countries that send their resources in their raw state, Morocco is committed to creating added value through the processing of minerals, which generates employment and boosts the national economy.

A boost to foreign investment and economic growth

The attractiveness of the Moroccan mining sector has led to a significant increase in foreign direct investment (FDI). In 2024, FDI in mining grew by 61%, with more than 100 projects underway. This growth has not only strengthened the sector, but has also had a positive effect on the economy, boosting infrastructure development and generating new job opportunities.

The mining sector is also a fundamental pillar in Morocco's trade balance, as it contributes substantially to the country's exports. In addition to phosphate, of which Morocco is the world's largest producer, the extraction and marketing of strategic metals positions the country as an essential supplier in the global supply chain.

Morocco in the regional and international panorama

In the African context, Morocco stands out as a leader in the mining sector, competing with countries such as South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Internationally, its wealth of strategic minerals makes it a key partner for advanced economies seeking to diversify their sources of supply and ensure access to materials essential for the technology and energy industries.

With a vision for the future, Morocco is investing in sustainable extraction technologies and in research into new deposits, thus guaranteeing responsible and sustainable mining development. The sector's potential is huge, and if managed correctly it could turn the country into a leading mining power in the coming years.
