NAV CANADA and Indra have announced that they have reached a landmark agreement that will contribute to the evolution of Canada's air traffic management systems.

  1. New control technology in Canada

The first phase of the agreement will address the deployment of a state-of-the-art flight data processing system (FDPS) and an air traffic flow management (iACM) system for complex airspaces within NAV CANADA's centre responsible for managing the country's air navigation network.

New control technology in Canada

In line with NAV CANADA's strategic direction, this partnership represents a tangible step towards introducing Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) in Canada, moving air traffic management towards a strategic approach, providing a more complete view of the flight from take-off to landing. This new technology can calculate routes with high accuracy and predict the evolution of air traffic over a long horizon, allowing for better planning and coordination.

These systems will integrate the processing of information from Canada's area control centres, automatically notifying the system of any changes to flight plans between each of their respective airspaces. This will provide greater flexibility which will result in improved traffic flow within Canadian airspace and across the rest of the network. The result will be more efficient routes for air operators and a reduction in fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions, while providing greater operational resilience and meeting the need for increased capacity to handle more flights in a growing industry.

These advances, which continue to put safety at the forefront, reflect the vision for the future of air traffic management defined in the Aviation Systems Block Upgrades (ASBU) driven by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which promote technologies that enable greater collaboration and operational predictability in global aviation.

This agreement reinforces the collaboration between NAV CANADA, the British NATS and the Norwegian Avinor, which also count on Indra as a strategic technology partner. Both companies have welcomed this important agreement.

The technology will be deployed over ten years in all NAV CANADA facilities.

"We are proud to announce that we have reached an agreement with Indra to deploy the next generation of air traffic management systems in Canada," said Raymond G. Bohn, president and CEO of NAV CANADA. "Once completed, it will be a generational leap in the tools we provide to our employees, building on our strong track record in deploying leading platforms and providing an opportunity to play a leadership role in global air navigation and contribute to a more sustainable and efficient future for air travel in Canada. Safety, innovation, expertise and collaboration are the fundamental pillars of NAV CANADA's business strategy".

Indra's CEO Marc Murtra said: "Indra's technology will not only increase the efficiency of air traffic management in Canada, but will also improve predictability and contribute to reducing environmental impact. What we are signing today goes beyond a simple agreement between companies; it represents a renewed commitment between nations. This collaboration is a step forward in sharing knowledge and technology, fostering new flows of relationships, and moving towards more efficient and sustainable aviation".
