Now is the time for Spanish businessmen in Morocco
Casablanca hosted the III Spain-Morocco Business Meeting with the aim of encouraging Spanish companies to invest in the Moroccan kingdom. In this context, Atalayar spoke with Juan García Muñoz, president of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Casablanca, who explained that relations with Morocco are at their best and that the Spanish businessman has to take advantage of it and start the installation of Spanish companies in Moroccan territory.
As a representative of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Casablanca, what role do you play in an economic forum such as the one held in the Moroccan city?
This economic forum is important, it is the third one we have organised, first in Rabat, then in Madrid and this one in Casablanca. We at the Chamber are always at the service of Spanish and Moroccan companies within the framework of the development of activities between the countries. And our main purpose is precisely to extend the influence of Spanish companies in Morocco more and more each day.
As a citizen living in Casablanca and as an economic expert, what would you say to a Spanish businessman who came here 20 years ago and saw a country that was much less developed than the Spanish one, and who today can arrive and be surprised?
I myself am surprised. 30 years ago I founded my personal company here, because I am also a businessman, I have a legal and tax firm and I advise most of the companies that come to Morocco. 30 ago, in the framework of the construction of the gas pipeline from Algeria to Morocco and Spain, a few companies came here. There was very little infrastructure, there was only a 100 km motorway. Now we have more than 1,500 km of motorway, this is extraordinary, we have infrastructure, we have large ports, with communication from Africa to Spain, to Europe, in short, this country has grown enormously and there are many possibilities. The only thing I can say to the Spanish businessman is that now is the time, we must take advantage of the excellent relations we have, and that he should consider Morocco as a platform for Africa, and that Spanish companies should set up in Morocco.
