Tangier Med ranks in the Top 5 most efficient ports in the world
Inaugurated in 2007 and situated on the side of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Port of Tangier Med has been ranked fourth in the report published by the World Bank "Container Port Performance Index" (CPPI).
This report was released last Thursday 22nd May through a World Bank publication, "The Container Port Performance Index 2022: a comparable assessment of performance based on vessel time in port". This index has been developed by the World Bank with the collaboration of external contributors such as S&P Global Market Intelligence, a company dedicated to providing industry financial data, research and analysis for various fields.
According to the report published by the World Bank, with regard to the efficiency of port centres, the Port of Tangier Med is in fourth place on a global scale, followed by the Yangshan terminal (China) in first place, Salalah (Oman) and Khalifa (Abu Dhabi) in second and third place, making it the most efficient port in the Mediterranean.
With the results of this report, it is hoped that defects within commercial port infrastructures can be identified so that all the areas involved can improve the performance of the activities carried out in the port centres.
Efficiency, evaluated by the World Bank, together with contributors such as S&P Global Market Intelligence, takes into account parameters such as the frequency of weekly departures, berthing at specific time margins or the fixed sequence of port calls. Taking into account these parameters and others such as arrival time, berth idleness and cargo operations, the index compares the time-based port performance of 348 ports globally.
The Port of Tangier Med has a capacity of 5 million TEUs (official container size of 6.1m), with an expansion, launched in 2019, expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025, bringing the port complex to a total capacity of 9 million TEUs. This would make it the port with the largest capacity in the Mediterranean (taking the port of Valencia, Spain with 5.6 million and the port of Piraeus, Greece with 5.3 million). Connected to more than 180 ports in the world, it exports 1 million new vehicles, and transits 7 million passengers and 700,000 trucks annually.
According to the port authorities of Tangier Med, this port centre handles more than 50% of Morocco's total exports, and is a decisive factor in the dynamics of trade with Europe. After the two years of the pandemic, it has regained first place in container traffic, recovering from the events caused by the COVID crisis and is expected to continue to grow thanks to the constant investment by the Moroccan government in this industry.
