The port of Tangier Med handled over 161 million tonnes of goods in 2025
Last year, traffic at the port in northern Morocco exceeded 11.1 million containers, over half a million lorries, 895,000 vehicles and more than 3.2 million people
- More than 11 million containers
- Trucks and cars
- Operation Marhaba
- Bulk activity and total tonnage
- Port calls
The Tangier Med Port Authority has presented its port activity report for 2025, highlighting the growth in its activity compared to the previous year.
More than 11 million containers
In terms of container numbers, 11,106,164 TEU containers (standardised measurement of 20-foot-long containers, used to compare port traffic) passed through the Tangier Med facilities last year, representing an 8.4% increase on 2024.
To cope with this increase in container traffic, it was necessary to bring into service the latest extension of the TC4 terminal, operated by APM Terminals, the transport and logistics division of the Danish shipping company Maersk. It should be remembered that in 2024 the port of Tangier Med had already reached its maximum capacity, with more than nine million containers, making a new expansion of the facilities essential, the third since this facility was put into service.
Trucks and cars
In terms of road traffic, truck traffic grew slightly in 2025 compared to the previous year, by 3.6%, reaching 535,203 heavy vehicles.
According to the Port Authority's report, this growth is explained by the 4.8% increase in exports of industrial products and 4.3% in agri-food products, making Tangier Med a key element in the Moroccan economy.
Tangier Med is also a key point for the transport of cars from Morocco to Europe, which has become one of the country's main export activities in recent years.
In 2025, the two vehicle terminals at Tangier Med handled the transport of a total of 526,862 vehicles, a 12% decrease compared to the previous year, due to adjustments in car production resulting from changes in market demand and the reconfiguration of flows in global car markets.
These 562,862 vehicles are divided between:
- 327,569 exported from the Renault plant in Melloussa and the Somaca plant in Casablanca.
- 126,874 vehicles exported from the Stellantis plant in Kenitra.
- 327,569 vehicles in transhipment.
Operation Marhaba
In terms of passenger traffic, year-on-year growth was 5.7%, with more than 3.2 million passengers, while the number of vehicles was 895,341, up 5%.
A large part of these figures correspond to the so-called Operation Marhaba or Crossing of the Strait, one of the port's annual highlights in terms of vehicle and passenger traffic crossing the Strait during the summer season.
According to the Port Authority, in order to speed up this transit, a fixed ticket system was introduced in 2025, which helped to regulate flows according to the actual capacity of the fleet and ensured smoother crossings.
Bulk activity and total tonnage
In 2025, the port in northern Morocco recorded solid bulk traffic equivalent to 522,493 tonnes, which also represents an 11% decrease compared to the previous year, which the Port Authority attributes to the postponement of cereal imports compared to 2024.
In contrast, liquid bulk increased by 13% year-on-year to 8.6 million tonnes, driven by hydrocarbon traffic.
In total, the port complex handled 161 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, 13.3% more than the previous year, placing it at the top of the Mediterranean and African ports.
Port calls
Finally, port calls amounted to 16,686 in 2025, 4.45% less than in 2024. This is explained by the international trend in passenger and freight transport to increase the size of ships to provide them with greater capacity, which obviously reduces the number of annual units.
Of these, 1,319 belonged to the mega-ship category (more than 290 metres in length), representing an 8.4% year-on-year increase.
According to the report by the Tangier Med Port Authority, ‘the 2025 results reflect the strong commitment of the entire port ecosystem, the operational excellence of its teams and the efficiency of its infrastructure. They further consolidate the leadership of the Tangier Med port complex in the Mediterranean and Africa, serving national and international supply chains’.
