PHOTO/SOCIAL MEDIA - Led by UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, the UNWTO delegation visited Morocco to discuss the programme, roadmap and venues for the statutory meeting, which will focus on three key themes: Education and Youth, Rural Development and Digital Innovation.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Kingdom of Morocco have met to advance preparations for the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly which will take place in October 2021 in Marrakech and will be the first global UN meeting since the pandemic began.

Led by Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, the UNWTO delegation has visited Morocco to discuss the programme, roadmap and venues for the statutory meeting which will focus on three key themes: Education and Youth, Rural Development and Digital Innovation.

Morocco's Minister of Tourism, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, and her team accompanied the delegation during the three-day visit, pledging to organise a "historic" Assembly, demonstrating the importance of reviving international tourism in a safe and more sustainable way.

The Prime Minister of Morocco, Saad Eddine El Othmani, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, welcomed the UNWTO Secretary-General in Rabat and stressed the importance of this meeting and the host country's support at the highest level. The delegation was also received by the Governor of the Marrakech-Safi region, Karim Kassi Lahlou, and other local and private sector authorities of the area, directly involved in the preparations of this event.

Secretary General Pololikashivili thanked the Prime Minister and his government for their close cooperation in ensuring that the Assembly is a success in the face of the unprecedented crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. "Tourism is adapting to a new reality and faces the future with optimism and the support of our member states," he said.

The Assembly will address UNWTO's vision for the recovery and rethinking of tourism, including the introduction of new travel protocols and other key issues identified as priorities by UNWTO Member States for the coming years.
