Cybercriminals steal over $100m from blockchain projects

Cyberattacks on Blockchain-based projects, including cryptocurrencies, allowed cybercriminals to steal more than $100 million during the first quarter of this year 2021, according to data from Atlas VPN.
With the total of $108.3m stolen, €89.85m at the exchange rate, cyber attacks on Blockchain projects have netted 46% more in the first three months of the year than in the same period last year.
According to research published by cybersecurity company Atlas VPN, among these types of attacks, Ethereum applications were the most popular. In a total of 11 attacks and five scam events, criminals made $86 million.
Close behind were attacks on Blockchain wallets, with nine major breaches, one scam event and two cases of blackmail in the first quarter, with $19.3 million in losses.
There were also four breaches and one scam event on cryptocurrency exchanges, with cybercriminals pocketing $2.9m.
Blockchain hacks have also seen growth, with 33 hacks in the first quarter up 154% year-on-year.
