As a result of the technological boom that China has experienced, the Asian giant's brands have begun to contemplate the Mexican market as an important target for the export of products of Chinese origin.

The president of the Mexico-China Chamber of Commerce and Technology, Amapola Grijalva, insisted on the importance of controlling and integrating China's offer thanks to the development of its own brands.

"China has functioned as an export industry: selling parts and components worldwide and assembling products. They have also been in charge of the design of their products up to the final total control," Grijalva said.

By the end of 2021, 85% of imports were of Chinese origin into Mexico, while only 15% of Mexican exports were destined for China, according to the president of the Mexican Chamber of Commerce.

In preliminary figures, Grijalva commented that economic ties between the two countries could grow by 23%, $90 billion more than at the end of last year, compared to the $73 billion recorded in 2020.

"The total volume of transactions between Mexico and China we think will be in the order of 90 billion dollars, of which we estimate that 85% are imports and 15% are exports," Grijalva explained in an interview with the media Milenio.

As for the resources earmarked for technological creation, the president of the business chamber pointed out that by 2025 China plans to invest 3.2% of its gross domestic product (GDP) in technology development, including investment in research and science.

Interest in the Mexican market

One of the companies most interested in the Mexican market is Chinese technology manufacturer Huawei, which in recent years has sought to cater to a population with high connectivity needs, said Carlos Morales, public relations manager for Huawei's Latin American consumer division.

"Our mission is to bring the digital experience to every person, home and organisation for a smart and fully connected world, and for almost a decade we have been offering Mexicans affordable, functional and sophisticated mobile devices, constantly democratising access to technologies such as on-device AI, multiple cameras, fast charging and a secure environment," Morales said.

With regard to mobile phones, Morales explained that "these devices are already very popular" and that, although the penetration rate of mobile phones in Mexico has passed the 100 % threshold, according to the Federal Telecommunications Institute, there is still a large market opportunity in the country and that many users are gradually migrating to higher ranges and with more features.

"Considering this scenario and that Huawei is one of the world's leading investors in research and development, we are in an excellent position to give users what they need," he said.
