Algeria gives its version of the incident at sea which claimed the lives of two young Franco-Moroccan men
"During a security and inspection round in our territorial waters, a coastguard unit from the 2nd Military Region encountered three jet-skis violating our territorial waters on Monday August 29 at 7:47pm," reads the Ministry of Defense statement.
"After several verbal warnings to stop, which were not acted upon by the jet-skiers, who engaged in dangerous maneuvers, and given that this maritime border zone sees intense activity by gangs specializing in drug trafficking and organized crime, and faced with the stubbornness of these jet-skiers and after several attempts, fire was fired at one of the vehicles, which came to a halt. The other two fled," continues the Algerian Ministry of National Defense press release.
The same communiqué goes on to explain the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of one of the two victims. "On Wednesday August 30, 2023," it reads, "at around 5pm during another coastguard patrol, an unidentified male body was discovered, shot. He was taken to the Tlemcen hospital morgue.
So we now know why the body of the second victim was not buried. Information that a third yachtsman had been imprisoned is also unfounded.
Following the reaction of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Friday, it is now the turn of the Algerian authorities to give their version of the incident. It remains to be seen what the Moroccan side's official version will be, and above all whether an inquiry will be opened to reveal the whole truth about the death of two young yachtsmen who had gone on vacation to their parents' country.
