Ethiopia claims to have foiled an attack on the Emirati embassy
Ethiopian authorities have arrested 15 terrorists who planned to attack the United Arab Emirates (UAE) embassy in the capital Addis Ababa, local authorities announced late on Wednesday.
The attack, according to the intelligence service, was intended to cause a significant number of casualties and extensive material damage, as well as tarnish the image of Addis Ababa, home to the African Union (AU) and numerous international diplomatic missions.
At least fifteen people were arrested while planning the attack on the Emirati diplomatic building, with the aim of damaging Ethiopia's image, the security forces said in a statement.
During the operation, the Ethiopian security forces also seized several firearms, explosives and various documents, the Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), which is sympathetic to the Ethiopian government, reported on Wednesday.
The terrorist group, led by Ali Ahmed Adaito, 35, who is among those arrested, planned to attack the UAE embassy, local broadcaster Fana reported, citing a statement from the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS).
Among those arrested is Ahmed Ismael, the leader of the terrorist group and a resident of Sweden, who was arrested in the Scandinavian country as a result of information sharing with European, African and Asian security services.
According to the statement, the NISS, in cooperation with the Sudanese secret services, also helped dismantle another terrorist group, thwarting another planned attack on the United Arab Emirates embassy in Sudan's capital Khartoum.
Sudanese authorities were alerted to the imminent danger by Ethiopian intelligence and were able to thwart the planned attack, the statement said.
