Ex-President Zapatero pledges support for the Saharawi Peace Movement

The Saharawi Movement for Peace, which is holding its founding congress this weekend with the participation of several hundred activists inside and outside the territories of Western Sahara, has achieved great political success after the support of former Spanish President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
He is the first major international leader to speak out clearly in favour of the goals and activities of the young Saharan movement, which has been in existence for scarcely a few months.
Zapatero intervened in Congress this Saturday with a symbolic and committed speech. The former Spanish president assured that "the words peace, coexistence, cooperation and solidarity" that have resounded in the Congress "are the only possible path towards the future". "This young movement represents great hopes for the Saharawis and for the other peoples of the region".
The former Spanish president, who also has excellent relations with the regimes of Venezuela and Cuba, both of which are firm supporters of the Polisario Front, ended his speech by declaring that "the international community supports your objectives and I guarantee my efforts and personal support".
Zapatero's participation in the congress of the Saharawis for Peace signifies an important step in the dialogue between the Rabat government and representatives of the Saharawi population, and will not fail to open up an important debate within the Polisario Front.
