Alemania expresa a Marruecos su interés en retomar relaciones diplomáticas
The German Embassy in Rabat today expressed to Morocco its country's interest in returning to "the good and traditionally broad diplomatic relations" it had with the Maghreb country, broken for more than seven months by Rabat.
In a message posted on its Facebook page, the embassy stresses that "the Kingdom of Morocco is an important partner of Germany" and says that resuming relations would be in the interest of both countries.
"Germany is ready for a partnership that looks to the future on an equal footing," the statement said, adding that the government of the German country welcomes "with satisfaction" the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel carried out over the past year.
In the communiqué, Germany defends itself against the "false information" spread in recent days in the Moroccan media, which attributes to German intelligence a report on Morocco by the Swiss researcher Isabelle Werenfels, which, the note indicates, has no connection with the German intelligence services.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Naser Burita said last week in Parliament that relations with Germany must be based on "clarity and reciprocity" and that they "require action and efforts".
On 6 May, Morocco summoned its ambassador to Berlin in response to "hostile acts" which it attributes to the German authorities calling into question Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Morocco says relations with Germany must be based on reciprocity
The Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Naser Burita, affirmed that relations with Germany, a country with which Morocco has had a diplomatic crisis for more than seven months, should be based on "clarity and reciprocity".
Burita referred to Germany in a closed-door meeting last week with members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Councillors (upper house of Parliament), as reflected in a report to which Efe has had access.
The minister pointed out that relations with Germany "require action and efforts, according to a logic that takes into consideration clarity and reciprocity".
On 6 May last Morocco summoned its ambassador to Berlin in response to "hostile acts" which it attributes to the German authorities calling into question Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Two months earlier, in March last, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a letter addressed to all members of the Moroccan government in which it ordered the suspension of any contact or relations with the German Embassy in Rabat, referring then to "profound misunderstandings".
In the report presented to the Chamber of Councilors, in which Burita presented the budgets of his department, the minister also spoke of his country's relations with the European Union, which, according to him, experienced "an outstanding evolution" this year.
He also reiterated that with Spain his country "clings to good neighborliness" after the diplomatic crisis that broke out between the two countries last May.
Burita also asserted that the Sahara question "is at the top of the priorities of Moroccan diplomacy", adding that his country is pursuing a "firm and clear" policy in this field within several constants.
Among which he cited the "full sovereignty of Morocco over its Sahara", the clinging to the UN process based on autonomy as a solution to the conflict and the rejection of "outdated solutions" (alluding to the path of self-determination), as well as the respect of the cease-fire with the Polisario Front.
