The National Council of Resistance of Iran strongly condemns the death sentence passed on Ms. Varisha Moradi by the Iranian judiciary and calls for immediate international action to secure the release of this Kurdish compatriot.

On 10 November 2024, the notorious judge Abolqasem Salavati sentenced Varisha to death for ‘armed rebellion (Bagh-ye)’ in a mock trial at the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.

The charge was brought against the Kurdish activist for her alleged membership of the ‘Women's Community of Eastern Kurdistan’, known as ‘KJAR’.

Last month, UN human rights experts warned of a sharp increase in the number of executions in Iran and called for an immediate halt to these sentences.

More than 450 people have been hanged in Iran since Masoud Pezeshkian took office as president in July.

On Sunday 10 November, a number of political prisoners from the women's section of Evin Prison gathered and protested in the prison yard, shouting their anger at the death sentence handed down to political prisoner Varisha Moradi. The protest took place in two rounds, at 15:00 and 18:00, during the designated open air hours.

Among the slogans chanted by the political prisoners were:

‘Death to the dictator’

‘Evin women's ward stands united, committed until the death penalty is repealed’

‘Our lives may disappear, our heads may fall, but freedom will never be lost’

‘Passing death sentences is the rulers' revenge against Kurdish women and all over Iran’
