Israel successfully launched the spy satellite Ofek 16 into space on Monday, in what the defense minister described as an "extraordinary achievement for the defense system" of the country, as the crisis between Tel Aviv and Tehran has intensified, following the latest incidents.

The launch took place at four o'clock in the morning from an Israeli base in the centre of the country and, according to a statement from the Defence, the satellite is already in orbit and transmitting information. "The Space Administration of the Defense Research and Development Directorate of the Ministry of Defense and Aerospace Industries has launched the Ofek 16 satellite into space," the Defense Ministry said on Monday.

During the first days, a series of tests will be carried out to determine the quality and accuracy of the information, before starting full operational activities.

"Technological superiority and intelligence capabilities are essential for the security of the State of Israel," Defense Minister Beny Gantz said after the satellite launch. "We will continue to strengthen and maintain Israel's capabilities on every front and in every location," he added.

Ofek 16 was developed by the Defense Ministry's Space Administration, in collaboration with the Israeli government's Aerospace Industries and a number of private military and technology companies.

The Israeli Army, specifically intelligence units and the Air Force, were also involved in the development of the satellite and, once the tests are completed, will be in charge of supervising the information received.
