The Israeli army announced on Wednesday "a series of raids in Lebanon" by its fighter jets, raising fears of an escalation of the conflict between the two neighbouring countries in the context of the war in the Gaza Strip.

The army did not give details of the attack, but Lebanese media reported three locations hit.

The attacks come after a rocket fired from Lebanon injured several people in northern Israel on Wednesday, according to Israeli medical sources. According to Magen David Adom rescue services, seven people were injured, five of them in the Israeli town of Safed.

An AFP photographer saw medics and soldiers evacuating an injured person from Safed hospital in a military helicopter to another facility.

Since Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October, which triggered the war in the Gaza Strip, the Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah has been attacking Israeli military positions on the border in support of the Palestinian Islamist movement, its ally.

The violence between the Israeli army and Hezbollah has led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border.
