An Israeli delegation travelled to Sudan on Wednesday to negotiate the establishment of relations, which could be imminent, according to the state radio station Kan and the daily Yediot Aharonot.

The delegation left Wednesday for Khartoum from Ben Gurion airport on a private flight and returned seven hours later, the media said.

"A senior Israeli official confirmed last night that a public statement will be made in the coming days, perhaps before the end of the week, announcing that Israel and Sudan will normalise relations," the newspaper said.

The newspaper adds that it will be the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who will make the announcement, with video messages from the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the President of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Asked by Efe about the trip, a foreign affairs spokeswoman said that the ministry "is not commenting" on this issue.

The visit took place one day after Israel received on its soil the first official delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with whom normalisation is making great strides following the agreement signed in mid-September.

Bahrain quickly followed the Emirates in establishing relations and the United States and Israel insist that other Arab countries will "soon" do so.

Khartoum's agreement this week with Washington to pay millions of dollars in compensation to victims of terrorism has enabled the White House to announce it will remove Sudan from the list of terrorist states, paving the way for normalisation with Israel.
