Libya and Italy strengthen ties

The Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the visit of the Italian ambassador to the Shrine of Martyrs Sheikh Omar Al-Mukhtar in Benghazi.

Libya and Italy continue to strengthen diplomatic ties. Proof of this is the visit of the ambassador of the Italian Republic to Libya, Gianluca Alberini, to the shrine of the sheikh of the martyrs Omar Al-Mukhtar in Benghazi.

In compliance with the instructions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdul Hadi Al-Huwaij, the delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the director of the European Department, Kamla Ashour, and several employees of the Protocol Department and the Press Office of the Ministry were present at the visit made this Tuesday by the Italian ambassador to Libya Gianluca Alberini, accompanied by the Italian consul in Benghazi, Francesco Luigi, to the Shrine of the Sheikh of Martyrs Omar Al-Mukhtar.

The visit included a detailed explanation given by the director of the Peace Centre affiliated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Faraj Najm, about the great position that the Sheikh of Martyrs Omar Al-Mukhtar represents in the Libyan consciousness, and the cultural importance of the centre as one of the historical landmarks of the city of Benghazi.

The centre's director said that Libyans and people from all over the world confirm the presence of this character in the fight against the forces of hegemony and occupation.

He also said that the sanctuary receives important regional and international figures throughout the year, who learn extensively about an outstanding period in Libyan history and the stages of the legendary jihad during the Italian occupation.
