Malawi is one of over 100 countries that recognise Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara

Malawi's reiteration of support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara is important news for the region. With Malawi, there are now more than 10 countries that have opened consulates in the Sahrawi region, and it joins the more than 100 states that recognise the Moroccan solution as "the sole guarantor of stability and security in the region".

The Malawian minister's support is in line with UN resolutions to find a lasting solution. Like Nancy Tembo, Madalitso Kwaderanji Kazombo, First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi, in a meeting also with Minister Bourita, confirmed Malawi's strong support for the Moroccan ownership of Western Sahara.

Cooperation in agriculture, trade, infrastructure development, both strategic and health and education, is a reflection of Malawi's commitment to the stability and development of Morocco and Western Sahara.

With the opening of the Consulate in the city of Laayoune in 2021, Malawi laid the foundation stone in bilateral relations with Morocco. Other countries that opened their Consulates in Western Sahara were: Guinea in 2019, Senegal in 2018, Gambia in 2017 and Nigeria in 2016.

Following this decision, dialogue tables and expeditions have been a constant. The Malawian diplomatic corps confirmed that, following the meeting, cooperation and Moroccan investment in the Southeast African country will be increased.

Tourism was one of the main themes of the meeting. For Malawi, this sector accounts for a large part of its economy, so its proper development will be a major hallmark of cooperation between the two countries.

Morocco and Malawi have agreed to strengthen collaboration in the tourism sector, which will benefit both countries and generate jobs and economic growth in Malawi.

In addition to tourism, closer cultural and religious ties were left as a pending task for the next meetings between the ministers of both countries. Africa is the continent with the greatest diversity in any field, religion, culture, language, cuisine, ethnicity and traditions, making it a unique place.
