Mali announces new government following August coup
Mali's transitional president, Ba N'daou, announced the new government that will lead the 18-month transition, composed of 25 ministers, with four major portfolios occupied by military personnel.
The Ministry of Defence will be headed by Colonel Sadio Camara, that of Security and Civil Protection by Colonel Modibo Kone, and that of National Reconciliation by Colonel Major Ismael Wague.
The military leaders have been key members of the so-called National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP), a body set up by the military who led the coup of August 18 against the regime of Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
Most of the ministers appointed are technocrats and new profiles who are occupying a government position for the first time.
On September 21 the interim president, N'Daou, was elected interim president and a week later appointed former foreign minister Moctar Ouané as prime minister, as ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) required the appointment of civilian personalities as a condition for lifting the economic sanctions on the country.
Last week, however, ECOWAS decided to study what it considers to be "grey areas" in the Malian transition process before deciding to lift the sanctions.
One of the issues planned by the regional organisation is the appointment as vice-president of one of the leaders of the August 18 coup, Colonel Assimi Goita.
